Fond Memories of NTC
Here are some of my memories from what is now Liberty Station.
In a way, I know it’s progress, and in another way it hurts.
I attended boot camp in 1981, right there at RTC. I spent several months there afterwards before heading out to the fleet.
I didn’t know it, but it would be 5 years later and I would find myself back there as an E-5. There, I took my wife, and we stayed. We enjoyed the San Diego life style of two sailors in love!
5 more years later, we left San Diego - only to revisit in memories, friendly conversations with now-retirees that still call San Diego their home and in aerial photos provided by satellite imagry.
As a young sailor, I learned how to become a man there. I learned what 90 degrees, a hot tarmac and dress blues does to a young man!
Some day, maybe I’ll visit Liberty Station and see how new life has been breathed into old Naval History!
